INTRO
Between market, education and thinking: a contextual account fue el título de la presentación que dió Curating Contexts en un seminario en Goldsmiths, University of London en marzo 2011. El seminario se llamaba Collective Futures y se enfocaba en “experiencias críticas en contextos neoliberales”. Collective Futures es parte de una serie de seminarios sobre “el despliegue de lo académico“, desarrollado en Londres, Berlín y Copenhague en 2010 y 2011.

Between market, education and thinking: a contextual account is the title of a presentation Curating Contexts gave at the symposium Collective Futures at Goldsmiths University of London in March 2011. Collective Futures focused on “critical experiences in neoliberal contexts” and was the second in a series of three symposiums that are all concerned with “unfolding the academic” taking place in Berlin, London and Copenhagen throughout 2010 and 2011.

EXPERIENCIAS CRÍTICAS/CRITICAL EXPERIENCES
Between market, education and thinking: a contextual account discutía el potencial de experiencias críticas en Santiago, donde la escena está dominada por galerías comerciales y universidades privadas y donde los proyectos críticos a menudo son de corto plazo y desarrollados bajo pobres condiciones económicas. Queríamos investigar lugares donde es posible encontrar experiencias críticas para lo cual utilizamos una cartografía del arte en la ciudad – creada por Sidsel Nelund y José Ossandón para otro proyecto en 2010, que por cierto sirve sólo de modo ilustrativo y está continuamente abierta a cambios ,- que incluía un índice preliminar de los espacios de arte en la ciudad. La idea era usar el mapa para dar al público una entrada rápida a la situación de la ciudad sin necesidad de detenerse tanto de la historia y hechos políticos que marcan el contexto del arte en Santiago. Para cada uno de los espacio o proyecto que fueron discutidos- BLOC, Vaticanochico, MICH y Galería Metropolitana- se incluyeron imágenes en el mapa que permitieran ilustrar visualmente parte de sus respectivos trabajos.

Between market, education and thinking: a contextual account touched upon the potentials for critical experiences in Santiago, where the art scene is largely driven by the commercial market of galleries and universities and where more critical projects tend to be short-lived and under a lot of economic pressure. We wanted to look at where critical experiences can happen and used an art map (created by Sidsel Nelund and José Ossandón in early 2010 for another art project. The map is illustrative and continues to be open for changes and extensions) with a preliminary indexing of art spaces in the city. The aim of using the map was to give the public an immediate entry into the city’s art scene without spending too much time on historical and political facts. Each space or project that was mentioned in the presentation; BLOC, vaticanochico, MICH and Galería Metropolitana, had additional images in the map help explain visually the character of critical experiences that can be encountered there.

CREANDO NUEVAS EXPERIENCIAS/CREATING NEW EXPERIENCES
En términos más conceptuales, nuestro argumento giró en torno a la idea de que en un contexto latino americano no solamente tenemos que analizar y reflejar las experiencias que pasan acá (Nelly Richard y otros), pero también tenemos que crear nuevas experiencias que nos permitan expandir el análisis y llevarnos aun más lejos. El proyecto de (conversaciones ) se presentó como un experimento de eso, de crear una experiencia que tambien incluye y genera análisis del contexto (si haces click en la casa del mapa podrás encontrar fotos y textos que apoyan el argumento).

Theoretically, we argued that in a Latin American context we need not only analyze and reflect upon experiences that happen here (Nelly Richard among others), but also to create new experiences to have something to analyze and drive us further. The ( conversaciones ) project was presented as an experiment of creating experiences that also include and generate analysis on the context (if you click on the house on the map you will find the photos and text excerpts that followed the argument).

OTRAS EXPERIENCIAS/OTHER EXPERIENCES
En el simposium también hubo una conversación entre Gabriel Menotti y Camila Mello sobre pedagogía en prácticas de colectivos brasileños, y un taller con Brave New Alps y Bethany Wells sobre cómo imaginar y crear un espacio para experiencias críticas. Las fotos que siguen son parte del material creado por Wells para el taller y pueden ayudar a pensar un espacio crítico real:

The symposium also included a discussion between Gabriel Menotti and Camila Mello about pedagogy in Brazilian collective artistic practices and a workshop by Brave New Alps and Bethany Wells about how to imagine and create spaces for a critical experiences. When artists confront the city, time and space transform. Under the influence of the artist, the city becomes another land, as much as artists themselves are influenced by the powers of the urban environment. So, both the artist and the city begin a process of becoming- other. This could transform the city into a strange and unfamiliar place because there is room for artists to elude the present, to be travelers with or without destinations in mind. By these reasons they have the chance to become ‘context providers’ rather than ‘content providers’.

CATHERINE DAVID EN SANTIAGO (photos and English version beneath)
La curadora de arte contemporáneo Catherine David participó en una conversación con la
teórica Nelly Richard en GAM | Centro Gabriela Mistral, el miércoles 22 de diciembre 2010,
invitada por la Embajada de Francia en Chile. Posteriormente lideró un taller con curadores
y artistas chilenos organizado por el Consejo Nacional de las Artes y la Cultura en Chile. En
base a las discusiones que surgieron ese día presentamos aquí 10 puntos que nos parecen
interesantes de investigar en el contexto de arte contemporáneo en Santiago y Chile.

El rol del curador
1) Es parte importante dentro de la organisación de una exposición que el curador sea
capaz de elaborar un concepto, reflexionar acerca de este, generando un espacio para el
pensamiento, un dispositivo abierto: la exposición como investigación.

2) Es significativo hacer una distinción entre lo que es un promotor y un curador.

Conceptos
3) Podemos considerar usar el termino “prácticas estéticas contemporáneas” en vez
de “arte”.

4) La idea del “momento post-museo”.

5) Se puede pensar la modernidad como un fenómeno complejo que acepta la
heterogeneidad y diacronía entre su desarrollo en distintos contextos sociales y políticas
del mundo.

Arte y sociedad
6) “Representaciones exóticas” pueden aparecer en trabajos de artistas que intentan
acceder a importantes circuitos entregando algo ya esperado o que es parte de un estigma
establecido.

7) Cuál es el rol que juegan hoy en día las prácticas culturales en nuestro país?

8 ) El poder financiero de las infiltraciones entre arte y mercado hoy produce que el mercado
muchas veces define lo que es el arte.

Política
9) Se podría postular que el problema de lo visible es una cuestión política.

10) No es el papel del arte hacer política. La política es otro espacio, se podría hablar mas
bien de “Arte y Política” en vez de “arte político”.

CATHERINE DAVID IN SANTIAGO
On the 22nd of December the French curator Catherine David participated in a conversation
with the art theorist Nelly Richard at the GAM | Centro Gabriela Mistral. Later,
she took part in a workshop with Chilean curators and artists organized by the Ministry of
Culture in Chile. Reflecting upon the discussions and questions that appeared that day we
are here presenting 10 points we find stimulating to reflect upon in the context of contemporary art
in Santiago and Chile.

The role of the curator
1) A curator has to be able to elaborate a concept and reflect upon in the process of
curating an exhibition in order to generate a space for thinking: the exhibition would be see
as a space of investigation.

2) Differentiating between a promoter and a curator.

Concepts
3) Today, it seems more appropriate to talk about “contemporary aesthetic practices”
than “art”.

4) We are are now in the era of the “post-museum”.

5) Modernity is a complex phenomenon that incorporates heterogeneity and diachrony in its
historical development in different political and social contexts in the world.

Art and society
6) “Exotic representations”; artists that attempt to access to important art circuits presenting
a pre-established and stigmatized image of their culture in their artwork.

7) What is the role of cultural practices in Chile today?

8 ) The manners in which art and the market interconnect today gives power, to a certain
extend, to the market in deciding what art is.

Politics
9) It can be said that the problem of visibility is political.

10) It is not the role of art to be political. The political belongs to another space and one can
rather talk about “Art and Politics” than “political art”.
